Complex life-saving Cardiac surgeries performed at Fortis Hospital

Faridabad/ Alive News: Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad conducted two challenging and complex cardio vascular and thoracic surgeries on a 23 year old patient suffering from a rare congenital heart disease called EBSTEIN ANAMOLY, and a 48 year old patient with one lung and suffering from one of the most dreaded of cardiac ailments- Type A Dissection of the Aorta. Meanwhile, Dr. Neerav Bansal, Senior Consultant & HOD including Dr. Biju S Pillai, Senior Consultant- Department of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery of the hospital led the team to conduct the life-saving surgeries to bring the patients from critical conditions to normalcy.

Actually, a 23 year old Shashikant Mishra was afflicted with a rare congenital heart disease called EBSTEIN ANAMOLY with severe Valve regurgitation, hugely enlarged heart and heart dysfunction. This condition was congenital and caused due to improper development of one of the heart valves at birth, making it leak resulting in improper development of one of the pumping chambers of the heart. The patient’s heart was so enlarged that tests revealed a football like organ inside the chest rather than a heart in the normal size of a fist. The condition and symptoms had been ignored for years and it was only when the condition became a little critical that the patient was rushed to the hospital. It is noteworthy that many patients brought in at this stage cannot survive and it requires high levels of clinical excellence to treat such medical conditions.

Similarly, a 48 year old patient was diagnosed to have one of the most dreaded of cardiac ailments – Type A Dissection of the Aorta. The Aorta or the main vessel carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body had been torn, with the blood now streaming inside its paper thin walls. The patient functionally had only one lung as his left lung had been completely destroyed due to previous contraction of TB. This makes it medically almost impossible to subject patients with such low lung reserve to surgical procedures like the Bentall Operation which is needed for Type A Dissection.

Over this, Dr. Neerav Bansal, Senior Consultant & HOD- Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery said, “Patient Shashikant Mishra’s heart (right heart) functions had taken so much a beating, that if left untreated at the point he was brought in, he would have passed into an un-correctable heart failure in few months time. He definitely needed an open heart surgery at the earliest, but it was of very high risk and complex one as the heart size was almost three times of the normal. Usually these types of patients should have been taken care of in childhood itself and prevented from reaching this critical situation. The actual procedure he underwent was also rare, called one and half ventricle repair with valve replacement.”

Talking about the second case Dr. Biju S Pillai, Senior Consultant- Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery said, “The 48 year old patient’s preoperative evaluation revealed that his remaining lung had overgrown to compensate for the destroyed counterpart. The patient was taken up for a Bentall Procedure with a risk of 30-50% mortality. The highly challenging operation we undertook almost dismantled the entire valvular outflow of the heart and then replaces it with a synthetic prosthesis.”

Mr. Rajeev Bhandari, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad, said, “Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad has brought one of the most dynamic team Cardiac Surgery team equipped with necessary resources and infrastructure to undertake the greatest challenges medical science can throw at human heart.  With such surgeries, we have established ourselves as one of the top centers for similar procedures in the country.
